Rural GME Advisory Committee

This committee supports the training of specialists most rural hospitals need. It also establishes the rules for the use of rural rotation funds and monitors the rotations. The committee focuses on building partnerships between the residencies and the local communities that will provide long-term rural training arrangements; it avoids the occasional rotations desired by one individual. The committee establishes the policies for reimbursing residents for expenses incurred in rural rotations, including mileage and supplemental housing. It has been responsible for fulfilling the demonstration project's goal, "Increase flexibility for locating clinical training in the most appropriate training sites and facilities." To date, it has focused on establishing and expanding rural residencies for medical and dental residents.
