Physician Implementation Advisory Committee

Since the completion of the Utah Medical Education Council's (UMEC's) report, "Utah's Clinical Healthcare Workforce: Achieving Balance Through 2020", the main focus of the Physician Implementation Advisory Committee (PIAC) is to implement the recommendations of the report.

Scope of the Committee

Under the direction of the UMEC Board of Directors, the PIAC will implement the workforce report recommendations, specifically the tasks and strategies pertaining to physician workforce requirements. The committee also recommends the number of physicians needed in the state for each specialty, allocates training slots supported by funds directed by the UMEC, and suggests program changes according to changing statewide needs-in accordance with the Medicare GME Demonstration project.

Specifically, the committee will advise the UMEC on:

  • The mix of primary care and specialty care training consistent with the projected workforce requirements
  • The most appropriate steps to lessen Utah's increasing dependence on the national pool
  • Promoting the training of integrated workforce teams
  • Projecting the needed numbers of specific specialists and recommending adjustments in the size and areas of emphasis for the various residency programs
  • Strategies for competing in recruiting in the national pool, including coordinated and cooperative efforts between systems
  • Prioritizing potential new programs consistent with service demand, the ability to compete in the national market, and the capacity of patient clinical base to sustain quality training programs
